Fire!

It's not everyday that you get a visit from your local fire safety team requesting an amplifier (and audio installation advice) for their brand spanking new VW T5 pimped with an array of audio parts and gadgets galore!

Well that's exactly what happened a couple of months ago and the air certainly was ‘ablaze’ with excitement on this one! (Apologies for that singular fire-related pun - we promise that was the only one...)

The Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Community Safety Vehicle is an exciting and intersting concept; one which we haven't seen anything like previously.  Technician Lawrence Rayment came to the MC² factory to demo the system, and to explain to us about the background and main aims of the project.  He states:

"Road safety is a challenge for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service as it has one of the largest networks of rural roads in the UK.  However we are committed to reducing the numbers of road traffic collisions by using two main tools, Engagement and Education.  The T5 Transporter project was conceived with the aim of reaching out to the public with our road safety campaigns.

Young drivers have been notoriously hard to reach and the van’s objective is to encourage young drivers to talk to us by having a common point of interest. The modified T5 makes it easier to talk to them about the potential dangers they face when driving.

Changing the way this group behave is a difficult challenge, but by working with them in a way they want to be involved is a big step forward in having an impact on their driving behaviour.  The T5 allows us to speak to all young drivers especially those who are particularly interested in modifying their own vehicles. All staff that work with the vehicle have had specialist training in how to use the equipment, understand the messages that the project wants to get across and how to work with this target audience ensuring the education packages are delivered consistently.

In specific terms of delivery, the T5 has a rear facing wide screen TV which is used to present Road Safety videos.

Occasionally it is used in conjunction with an onboard Xbox 360 console that has driving simulation software used for working with young people.  We use a Shure Wireless microphone with the audio system to turn our vehicle into a mobile PA system providing a commentary when demonstrating vehicle extrications by our fire crews.  The rear facing speakers are driven by an MC2 T4-250  Power Amplifier that enables us to deliver our road safety presentations in wide open public places."

Now I bet you’re all thinking “How is this powered?”  Well... It can be run from an external mains source/generator, or by running an inverter on the leisure battery! All in all this makes the whole project accessible in a number of different surroundings/environments.

We have loved this project from concept to completion, as it’s a really motivating and forward-thinking way to raise awareness of road safety, and it definately engaged us all at the factory – we were very happy to be a part of it and were glad that we were able to support the charity in supplying an amplifier.  We look forward to hearing of its success in the coming months.

The Minirig from PASCE Bristol

Here at ‘MC2 towers’ we are all passionate about and love a good bit of music - who would have thought it hey!  Well myself in particular, I like to take my music everywhere I go, and I also quite like to broadcast it to everyone around me...  I’m not talking about keeping the neighbours up until 4am with 80's power ballads, nor having my headphones so loud that you struggle to hear the bloke next to you on the train, shouting on his mobile about what he did last night at the working mens club.  No, I’m talking about campsites @ festivals, house parties, beer gardens…the list goes on.

I have tried many different types of portable speaker and have had a range of results.  For me the most important things are battery life and volume (obviously good quality!).  It must have been about a year ago when I was poking about on Facebook and came across a link to the ‘Minirigs’ page.  I was immediately intrigued albeit about the name at first, as something really small & portable but with ‘rig’ in the name sounded a bit exaggerated or far-fetched.  I was wrong.

I added myself to the email list and waited to get confirmation that these items were available for shipping.  A few gigs in Bristol had meant that I heard more and more about said ‘minirig’ and this made me even keener to see/hear/experience it.

A few months ago I got the email I had been waiting for… No not the one telling me that I’d won the Nigerian lottery (...again!) but one with the subject  ‘place your orders now’.  I quickly paid my £85 via paypal (very reasonable, considering I had heard they were going to be over £100), and started counting down the 3 weeks till delivery.

Bang on 3 weeks later it arrived!

Yes!

From the moment the postman handed me the cylindrical tube and I opened it up I was impressed.  Packaging/presentation is an important part of all products and here it has been done well.  Within a minute of receiving the parcel I had Metro Area pumping out of it, with outstanding results - a small crowd of colleagues had gathered around asking where they could get one from!

The features of this product are excellent, and add something that competition misses - dual 3.5mm jack inputs for low and high gain settings (perfect for those low volume recordings), 15 watt output, 50 hours playback (!!!) with rechargeable battery, personalised serial number label on rear of unit, swish aluminium housing.  You can even use the dual jack inputs to daisy chain multiple minirigs together!

Extremely Portable
Personalised
When looking at portable audio in todays world you could say that this product is missing one thing - wireless connectivity.  It would obviously cost a bit to do this and the price of the unit would then increase to a less than (massively!) competitive level, so i guess that's why they missed this option out.  For me personally I wasn't bothered either way, but after seeing a suggestion on Facebook i decided to purchase a Bluetooth Stereo Audio Receiver (£16.99!) that has a 3.5mm Jack connection - Job done!

This is an excellent bit of kit that everyone will love, regardless of if you are into your gadgets or not.  Just crack this little baby out one day and just watch the floods of people coming over and asking you what/where/when etc...

So for the final thought I'll leave you here - For best results follow the instructions of MC2 Senior Technical Engineer, Martin Potts and...

It really does sound amazing in a corner, even one where the paintwork has started to crack!

Tea equals MC²

So for those of you who missed this classic piece of footage, here it is again...

Presented by Sales & Marketing Director Bill Woods and Technical Sales' Richard Fleming, our E100 4 channel amplifier boiling a kettle, toasting crumpets, and playing music...happily!

Obviously quality of sound isn't what's being addressed here as that comes STANDARD with all MC² products!  The point of the video was to demonstrate the versatility (in a metaphorical way!) and power capabilities of the amplifier, whilst injecting some fun into the equation.  With the E100 the possibilities are simply endless.

Richard states:
"The main aim was an interesting and memorable launch for the E100.
  • The E100 is a product which is designed and built in England.
  • Tea is a terribly English drink for which we are known for throughout the world.
  • Tea & Crumpets are even more English!
The E100 generates enough voltage in bridged mode to power toasters and kettles.  Depending on how much current is required you can use either music or a sine wave - that's exactly what we did, a sine wave drove the kettle and Boccherinis Minuet drove the toaster & speaker."

The Speakon/4-Way combination used!

Handlebars @ Dawn!

Well it's that time of year again, when all through November men all over the UK spend a month growing ludicrously flamboyant moustaches in order to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Movember.

A few of the guys at the factory (who have the ability to grow ‘proper’ facial hair) decided to take part and here are the results…

The early stages (Alex, Stuart, Jason, Dave)

Production Supervisor Stuart a.k.a. FREDDIE - 30/11/2011

Electronics assembler Jason a.k.a. LEMMY - 30/11/2011
Test Engineer, Alex a.k.a. HULK - 30/11/2011
Congratulations boys!

On behalf of their best efforts; braving a whole month of unbearable itching and awkward looks in the street, the management @ MC2 have decided to make a donation of £200 to the Movember fund.

Until next year...
